Overview:

The Design Supervisor leads a team of 5–10 residential solar designers to deliver accurate, buildable, and code-compliant plan sets on time. This role ensures high-quality designs, fast cycle times, and first-pass permit approvals by fostering technical excellence, operational efficiency, and team growth. The Supervisor partners closely with Engineering, Field Operations, and Permitting to minimize rework and inspection failures while cultivating a high-performing, engaged design team.

Key Responsibilities:

Team Leadership & Development

  • Manage the day-to-day workload, priorities, and SLAs for a 5–10 person design team.

  • Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and targeted upskilling sessions to develop technical and professional competencies.

  • Establish clear, attainable goals to improve quality, accuracy, and cycle times.

  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Participate in staffing, forecasting, and hiring processes to ensure adequate resourcing and skill alignment.

Design Quality & Compliance

  • Review and approve plan sets for accuracy, constructability, and compliance with structural, electrical, and fire codes.

  • Serve as the subject matter expert in PV and electrical design, providing technical guidance and training to team members.

  • Maintain design compliance with grid and permitting requirements across multiple AHJs and utilities.

  • Execute accurate system sizing and ensure adherence to design standards and regional variations.

Operational Excellence

  • Maintain and optimize the design queue to ensure timely throughput and balanced workloads.

  • Track and report on key team metrics, such as first-pass approval rates, redesign rates, and average cycle times.

  • Audit send-backs and AHJ/utility corrections to identify trends and reduce project delays.

  • Standardize best practices, templates, and checklists to enhance accuracy and reduce rework.

  • Partner with internal stakeholders (Field Ops, Engineering, and Permitting) to troubleshoot issues, resolve comments, and improve pre-submittal quality checks.

  • Collaborate with peers and leadership to create, refine, and implement SOPs that support scalable, efficient operations.

Continuous Improvement & Strategy

  • Lead process improvement initiatives and A/B test new workflows or tools to drive measurable efficiency gains.

  • Leverage team feedback and data insights to inform strategic process enhancements.

  • Ensure effective communication and cross-functional alignment throughout the design and engineering process.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of people leadership with coaching responsibilities.

  • 3+ years solar design experience (residential required) with strong CAD/Aurora skills.

  • Working knowledge of NEC (2020/2023), local AHJ and utility interconnection basics.

  • Proven collaborator: calm under pressure, clear written & verbal communication.

  • Process-minded with comfort in KPIs, queues, and change control.

  • Strong familiarity of Solar + Battery Storage designs.

  • Ability to build plans and material lists manually if needed.

  • NABCEP PV Associate or PVIP is preferred.

  • Experience with QC/field feedback loops, permit submittals, and inspection support is preferred.

  • Familiarity with Jira/ClickUp and SQL/Excel/Power BI for light analysis is preferred.

Success Metrics (First 90–180 Days):

  • First-Pass Permit Approval Rate: = 90% (market-adjusted, designer-attributable).

  • Redesign Rate: < 10% (designer-attributable).

  • Cycle Time: Average of = 1 business day per plan set.

  • Team Engagement: 100% completion of 1:1s and documented growth plans for all team members.
